Moving to Dubai: First Steps Checklist for Expats 2026

Visa and documents

Work visas are arranged by your employer. Residency visas through property investment start from 750,000 AED. After arrival you have 60 days to obtain your Emirates ID — without it you cannot open a bank account.

Banking and finances

Top banks for expats: Emirates NBD, ADCB, Mashreq. To open an account you need Emirates ID, residency visa and proof of address. Visa and Mastercard are accepted everywhere.

Housing

Only rent long-term accommodation after receiving your Emirates ID — you cannot sign an Ejari contract without it. For your first weeks, use serviced apartments or Airbnb.

Schools and nurseries

International schools fill up 6–12 months in advance — submit applications as soon as you decide to relocate. Most leading schools follow British, American or IB curricula.

Health insurance

Medical insurance is mandatory for visa issuance. Employers must provide it for employees. For family members, arrange separately — from around 3,000 AED per year.

Useful apps and services

Apps: Careem (taxis), Deliveroo (food), Dubai Now (government services). For home maintenance and minor repairs in your new apartment, Dubai Vista covers the whole of Dubai.
